Student Experience NDSM
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Context-driven design at scale
The architecture had to earn its place on the former NDSM shipyard. Clad in Corten steel with a facade language compared to late 19th-century Chicago, the 12-storey complex reflects the industrial character of its surroundings while delivering a modern, full-service living environment. The 403 studios range from 21 to 31 m², each with a private kitchen and bathroom. Bouwinvest acquired the asset through a joint venture with COD, Borghese Real Estate and Verweij Mungra Vastgoed. The project was recognised with the Best New Student Housing Development award by The Class Foundation in 2018.

A ferry ride from Central Station
The free ferry from Amsterdam Centraal brings residents to the NDSM wharf in minutes. Inside the complex, a lounge, game corner, study rooms, private dining room and launderette occupy the ground floor. The rooftop combines a sports field with a terrace and loungers across 12 storeys of unobstructed views over the IJ. On-site medical facilities, including a GP, dentist and physiotherapist, are connected to the building. Outside, the NDSM neighbourhood offers Pllek, Loetje aan het IJ and some of Amsterdam's best summer festivals.
Corten steel, 12 storeys, and a rooftop sports field overlooking the IJ. NDSM was the third Student Experience complex and the first to be built as a permanent structure within a larger mixed-use development. Opened in 2017, its architecture draws on the industrial heritage of the former shipyard while delivering the full Student Experience standard.
Every project is shaped by the people behind it. We partner with specialists who share our commitment to building living environments that last.
